Behind the Brand

“Start where you are,

Use what you have,

Do what you can.”

—Arthur Ashe

This quotation was printed on the dry erase board

that I have walked past for over 104 Thursday mornings.

It has been over the course of those mornings, that I have learned to walk

the transition from compound trauma victim to survivor.

***

Knitting, I have found, keeps the hands moving and the mind steady—

it offers a tangible method for recognizing how

small steps repeated can yield great achievement.

***

Learning to make way for the discovery of details often lost—

like an individual fiber’s characteristics, and how together,

they help us survive the elements— has helped me transcend some of life’s most precarious struggles.

***

My yarns are gratitude manifest, to and for our beautiful community.

Without the work of professionals & friends alike, I could not feel the peace I do today.

We are rich in encouragement, steadfast in support & thrive through uplifting.

***

It is my deepest conviction that together, we can do hard things—

when approached one step, or one knitted stitch,

at a time.
